A Sensory Experience


Location

East of Singapore River and Across China Town. The place is very easily accessed from wherever you are in Singapore City via, Bus, Cab or Mass Rapid Transit (MRT). If you take the MRT get down at the Little India Station and exit at Racecourse Road.

This Area is as Indian as you can get and yet it is Singaporean. Most of the Shops and eateries cater for the Locals, as such Visitors coming here experience the real Little India without the touristy feel. As you walk along the streets you will given an auditory treat with completing Bollywood and South Indian music blaring at full volume, almost from every corner. Women dressed in traditional colorful Sarees and jewelry This area was an Etnhic India, primarily Tamil neighborhoods. It has its origins around Serangoon Road in the early 1850's where Cattle rearing and trading were carried out.

Little India Attractions:

  • Temple - Sri Veerama Kaliamman Temple. Built in 1855 is one of the oldest temples. You get to see Intricately craved life size statues depicting various Hindu Deities in their various forms. At the gateway (Gopuram) is the Hindu symbol OM.

  • Kerbau Road- Here you would find all type of Vegetables used in Indian cooking. Such as Red Onions, Chilies, Spices, Radishes etc

  • Chander Street -a bit run down restaurants serving super South Indian fare , such as Thosais, Idlis and Banana leaf rice. Remember no fork and spoon here and use your right hand to pick your food. It is the custom here. Try the various flavors here. There are many types of Sweets and fruits sold here.

  • Desker Road - This area is primarily selling Bangladesh food stuff.

  • Tekka Center -Here at the shops you would find colorful Sarees, collectables and antiques.

Most of the hotels available here are of the 2 star and 3 star type and good value for money.
