Manila Location located on the Northern Island of Luzon. It is the Capital City of the Republic of Philippines. With a population of 20 million it is one of the most populous metropolitan cities in the World. The City is only about 38 Sq.km in Size. Adjacent to the City location is the famous Manila Bay.
History
The earliest known mention of this city was
during the Sri-Vijaya Empire as Suvarnadvipa (Land of Gold). Prior to
the arrival of European Colonialists like the Spanish, The Chinese had
an established trade presence due to its proximity to China. Trade
flourished during the Chinese Ming Dynasty era. Due to its Maritime
location it was exposed
to the influence of Buddhism, Hinduism and subsequently Islam at a later Stage
following conquests by the Sultanate of Brunei in the 16th. Century. The climate is primarily Tropical with seasonal Monsoon rains. Due to its location there are major Typhoons that cause extensive damage every few years. Temperature is between 23C to 35C.
Getting there Almost all international airlines fly into Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The Public transportation system in Manila can be extremely crowded. There is a new network of LRT (Light Rail transit) trains, Buses and taxis. Inter Island travel is by Ferry and Air. The most Iconic is the Jeepney-modified and gaily decorated WW2 Jeeps. To get a taste of Local Action do take a ride in one of these Jeepenys. The Best time to visit Philippines is from December to May where there is low risk of Typhoons.
What to do while your are in Manila There are so many things you can do in Manila. For history buffs there are numerous Historical buildings such as Fort Santiago-site of the Jose Rizal Memorial. Jose Rizal is the National Hero of independence of the Philippines. He was unfortunately captured and executed by the Spanish at this place. Plaza San Luis- Old Barrios (neighbourhoods) a Cultural-commercial Complex where you can exprience different Eras of the Philippines. There many gifts and speciality shops located inside this complex. Malacanang Palace is the official residence of the President of the Philippines. Take a ferry ride down the Pasig River. At one time the most polluted and Biologically dead river. After more than a decade of rehabilitation works with International aid the river is slowing returning with aquatic life. The Manila Ocean Park is an 8000 sq. meter Park that houses more than 20,000 animals of 300 Marine species. The Oceanarium has six sections each with a Filipino name: "Agos"; "Bahura"; "Buhay na Karagatan"; "Pating"; "Ang Kailaliman"; and "Laot". Manila Bay is the site of many battles, the most recent during WW2-The Battle of Corregidor. Watch lovely sunsets at the Bay in the evenings.

Manila has such an abundance of Hotels, resorts and Hostel at prices to suit every possible budget. If you are planning a Philippine Vacation you will not be disappointed. For the more adventurous there are numerous diving and snorkeling spots. Visitor make Manila as a focal point and travel on to other places in the Philippines. It is generally safe, friendly and easy going place. In the South there is an ongoing insurgency so exercise caution. |
