History

The Land where it is situated was granted to
the Indian Muslim community by Lieutenant Governor of Penang, Sir George
Leith, on 2nd. November 1801.

Original Land area was 7.2ha. (18 Acres).
Subsequent City Development it was reduced to 3.24 ha (8 Acres).

The original
mosque structure was a single-storey rectangular building, with a gently
sloping roof structure on all the sides and was surrounded by a stone
seating.

From 1910 till
1916 the mosque was given a major facelift in the British Moghul Revival
style, with the addition of Moghul domes, turrets, a large minaret and a madrasah ( religious school).

The 1930
renovation gave its present form and style. Major renovations during this period was doubling the height of the
central prayer hall, improvement of the ventilation system, and allowing
more natural light to enter. The exterior is painted yellow while the interior had
white marble floors and a high ceiling.

In 2003 the entire
complex was refurbished at cost of RM5 Million( USD1.38M), due to damage caused by water
seepage and poor drainage. A covered walkway, a women's ablution area and Calligraphy was added to the interior of the main dome and
walls.

mosque in Georgetown.

Highlights during
the tours were gracefully designed arches along its outer passageway
allowing a cool breeze to stream through, within the sanctuary, Gothic
arches open onto Moorish and Roman acres of marble white, adding ambience
to the spacious prayer hall.
