In the 60’s and 70’s
the hippies and the Vietnam R&R Penang Island was a major Holiday destination
and thus sprang a range of Accommodation types. The popular ones were around
Chulia Street and Batu Ferringhi Beach area on the North of the Island. Even
till today these enclaves still remain very popular with back packers.
In the 80’s onwards
there were more hotels built to cater for all budgets.
A unique thing about
Penang is- old homes, Colonial Bungalows, and Mansions that are turned into
hostels which give the Guest a unique experience not found elsewhere.
Most of them provide
basic amenities like clean duvets and linen, towels and simple breakfast but not
always all have an attached toilet in every room. Most will have TVs and
internet connection in the common lounge area. Some have coin operated
Launderettes or usually there are launderettes nearby. You can choose two
locations - stay in the city within close proximity to the UNESCO heritage site
of Georgetown or in the outskirts in the countryside near the beaches and hills.
If you have a more relaxed budget, you should try the Beach or Hillside resorts.
It does not matter which part of the Island you stay, most of Penang's main
attractions are a short distance away only- about 45 minutes (provided no
Traffic jams).
Within the Heritage city zone The Most famous hotel is the 115 year old Eastern
and Oriental Hotel. You can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city in
this abode with a great seafront view.
