Fort Cornwallis

Location

Fort Cornwallis Entrance
  • North East Cape of the Island, right next to the Esplanade within Georgetown City.

History

  • Construction of Fort with Brick and Mortar completed in 1789 with convict labor from India.

  •  The tip of Penang Island where Fort Cornwallis was located was called Fort Point.

  • Fort Cornwallis was named after the Governor-General of Bengal, Charles Marquis Cornwallis.

  • In 1882 a lighthouse was erected on the northeast side of Fort Cornwallis.

The Hop On Free Central Area Transit (CAT) ply the route between Weld Quay Jetty and Komtar.

  • Opening Hours: 0900hrs till 1830hrs.Daily.Closed on Sundays

  • Admission Fee: Adults-RM 3.00 ( USD 0.85)

  • There are cannons mounted along the perimeter.

  • The Chapel first recorded service was the marriage of the widow of Francis Light (Martina Rozells) to John Trimmers in 1799.

  • Most famous is the 400 year old, Sri Rambai, said to posses magical powers.

  • Within Fort grounds the Staff don Colonial British Army costumes.

  • Bronze statue of Francis Light.
