Bujang Valley- 2000 year Old Metropolis

Oldest Civilization in South East Asia


Location

It is located on the Mainland Peninsular in the State of Kedah. It is at the foothills of Gunung Jerai between Merbok River in Kedah and Muda River mouth. In ancient Indian text it was referred to as Kadaram. It is a living Museum Complex within the excavation area. The Site of this sprawling ancient City complex covers over 224 Sq. Km. but now it is estimated to cover more than 1000 Sq. Km. This ancient Trading and Port Metropolis continues to amaze historian the World over. It was first discovered by Capt. James Low in 1840.



Bujang Valley Attractions:

  • The Bujang Valley or locally known as Lembah Bujang is more than 2000 year old Archaeological City complex.

  • This Ancient Hindu-Buddhist is mentioned in ancient texts and stories.

  • This important Coastal city served as a Maritime Port for Trade between South India- Chola Kingdom and China and the rest of East Asia.

  • The Indian call this place Kadaram.

  • The City predates even Angkor Wat. The Impact of this Hindu and Buddhist culture is still present today in cultural , language and many Royal functions despite the onslaught of Islam.

  • During March 2010 a team of Researchers discovered an advanced Iron Smelting facility. This ancient facility is thought to have been used for ritualistic purposes. There are a total of seven such factories.

  • Ancient Jetties using Bricks Construction.

  • Soon to gazetted as the Bujang Valley Historical Park.

Getting there

Most visitors fly in Penang and then continue by road to Selising in Kedah. There is a Museum -Lembah Bujang Archaeological Museum where a small collection and Models of an overview of the Ancient City is displayed. Much of the site need to be visited on site. The Candis and Temple buildings are spread out.
